Crime and punishment

NSF has done a great deal of work to make Prison Records and the Police Gazette available. The reason is that we have experienced that these two sources can give us information that we cannot otherwise find elsewhere in the source material. Many women had children out of wedlock, and if they had 3, they had to go to prison, this and other information is often something that was not talked about. All criminal acts after 1886 are described in the Police Gazette, if the person has either been wanted, arrested or released from prison. If you find a person mentioned there, who you want to find out more about then the prison records are a good source. Other sources are court and property books, which you will mostly find in the Norwegian Digital Archive.
